FROM THE ARCHIVES:
Did you know I don’t like turkey? I’ve never acquired a taste for it. Perhaps that’s why, as a young poet of seven years old or so, I composed a Thanksgiving song with lyrics from a turkey’s point of view. I won’t sing it for you since neither of us would enjoy that very much. Depending on your sense of humor, this poem might ruffle a few feathers or be just the slice of entertainment you needed today!

If I Were a Turkey
If I were a turkey,
Then I think I would
Appreciate Thanksgiving
More than I should.
I’d sit on the table
And watch them all pray
And give thanks to their God
On Thanksgiving Day.
And though I’d be scared,
I’d delight in attention
They’d say, “What a bird!
Unhealthy, not to mention.”
When the stuffing comes out,
I’d feel empty inside.
Then they’d take a bite
Of my broken side.
But if I were a turkey
Cooked on a tray,
I know I’d be glad
To be part of that day.
